Isn’t that tedious?

I got this question a lot when I set out to make these benches. Understandable question. It was an incredibly tedious project at times, but it was also a totally gratifying result, and once I got the mechanics down, the weaving became a meditative process (it still took about 16 hours per bench).

This was my final project before starting grad school, and I took a couple weeks off between finishing work and starting school. With the time off, I was excited to try something new and time consuming that was totally unrelated to work or professional development. So in a pretty real way, these benches kind of mark a period of transition in my life, and I actually kept one. The other was a gift for my parents, and it has already survived a house fire, so I think it’s going to have a good and long life.
