A Sketchbook Practice

I draw a lot…

In the last 10 years I’ve filled at least one sketchbook a year—sometimes several. I do it as much as a way to decompress as I do to continue honing my craft. The books themselves are interesting time capsules. They mark periods of my artistic style, and they also document what was happening in my life and in the world at the time they were made. There are themes that cut across them all: interesting people I see; beautiful, compelling or bizarre places I’ve been; images of home and family. There are some moments of surrealism, but I mostly lean towards a figurative and cartoonish than I do towards the abstract. The practice is a part of who I am, and while adult life has a way of interrupting this kind of personal pursuit, I hope to maintain it in some form as long as I can hold a pen.
